As I mentioned on the home page, playing guitar has been something I've loved to do since I was pretty young. I've learned some challenging things. Eruption, however, will stand out as one of the most challenging things I will have learned.
At the beginning of this week when I started to learn the song, I questioned myself a few times. I've worked on it every day this week, and I haven't gotten past the first 10 seconds of the song. Literally. I knew it would be challenging, but I always surprise myself at what I got myself into. But strangely- it was less challenging than I expected at the same time. I knew of the techniques and had used them here and there. I was able to comprehend what the guy in the video was saying no problem. If you listen closely, the song uses the same techniques throughout the song. If I master one of these parts in the song, chances are the rest of the song will get easier. At the beginning of the solo, you hear Eddie do the opening slide and the pentatonic walk up the scale. I had no trouble with this. About five seconds into the song (yes, I'm already having trouble five seconds in) you hear this little lick he repeats four times that's a series of picks and pull offs (if you don't know, a pull off is where you're fretting the string but then you pull off with the fretted finger to sound the string.). He does this really fast, and that was my main obstacle. After working for a while on it, I was able to get it up to speed a few times, but my fingers often locked up on me in the middle of it. I'm fairly certain that this happens because they simply aren't used to moving that fast. They're used to the comfortable speed of Hendrix, Page, and Keith Richards, not so much the furious fingers of Eddie Van Halen. What I'm doing to combat that is starting slow in the beginning, then moving up to faster and keeping it at that speed. This, I'm hoping, will help me get used to that quick movement. I'm practicing at least ten to fifteen minutes every day just focusing on one part, and I'm hoping I keep up with that. Between school and online stuff, I don't know if this is good progress, but I know that I'm eager to get going more.
